Systemic Neglect of The People’ – Rep. Yogboh Unmasks Weak Legislative Oversight

Monrovia, Liberia — Montserrado County District #12 Representative Jerry Yogboh has issued a candid critique of the Liberian Legislature, acknowledging its failure to adequately perform its oversight and lawmaking duties.

Speaking during a live appearance on a local radio station Tuesday, Rep. Yogboh described the legislative process as plagued by inefficiency and poor diligence. He attributed much of the dysfunction to what he called the “laziness” of lawmakers, who often pass legislation without thoroughly reviewing its implications.

“Our laws are not always in the best interest of the people,” Yogboh admitted. “There’s a pattern where bills are passed without proper scrutiny, and that has real consequences for the everyday lives of Liberians.”

The representative warned that such systemic failings create a cycle of ineffective governance, where poorly crafted laws fail to address the country’s pressing issues.

In response, Rep. Yogboh said he is working to engage his colleagues in revisiting existing laws and ensuring that future legislation is designed with the public’s needs at its core. He emphasized the importance of a more diligent and people-centered approach to lawmaking.

Beyond legislative reform, Yogboh also underscored the importance of gender inclusion in Liberian politics. He revealed that efforts are underway to increase women’s representation in the Legislature, a move he believes will lead to more diverse perspectives and responsive governance.

“We must make room for women at the decision-making table,” he said. “Their voices are critical in shaping laws that reflect the realities of all Liberians.”

Rep. Yogboh’s remarks reflect a growing call among some lawmakers and civil society actors for a more accountable and inclusive government. His push for legislative reform and gender equity signals a broader effort to rebuild public trust in Liberia’s democratic institutions.
